The curse of the modern human is that there’s always something to do. The hamster wheel keeps on turning thanks to laundry, haircuts, dishes, lawncare, children, meals, jobs, vacations, families, church, school, sports, meetings, and of course, streaming services and social media requirements to prove we’re alive and breathing.
The curse of the modern human is also lack of time for discernment between staying on the wheel and forward motion. The work never stops. You can pride yourself on a chore list check check check check living one job at a time from here til kingdom come and there’ll still be laundry unfolded when you go to heaven.
Thanks to modern life distractions and how the internet is ever mastering ways to keep us using it, feeling busy and empty, worried and bored so cat video, buy stuff, cat video, buy stuff, playlist, and on and on, we are tricked into believing that to ask the bigger questions would be time away from this new modern routine we’re so good at and why?
Why? Because there’s a big difference between busy and productive. THere’a big difference between a list and an objective. If you’re great at lists, what does the work on that list define as the objective? If you’re more into objectives, how have you broken down the goal into tiny chewable bites?
It’s the difference between a job and project, right? Jobs are open and shut. Projects are broken down into steps.
Getting off the wheel is a game changer. We have more time for reflection and intentional living than any other generation before us. We created all these “time savers” and yet we cannot find the time. THe minute you let the laundry get its rightful place way way down the list and put making dream life come up way way up on the list? You’ll stop spinning and start gaining ground.
I’m using the internet for this post. I know it can hear me and my thoughts and I know it’s plotting right now to squash any talk about making choices beyond this faceless marketing machine, but oh well. You work with what you got, right? Those who we admire most are the Cinderellas who quit doing their chores to give all their energy and focus to one main thing. Somehow they had clothes to wear and cereal to eat. Anfd they help change the world. Have a good one.
